They saved my life
It took a while for Rick to understand the severity of his situation after he suffered a pulmonary embolism in his lung.
“I could hear the doctors behind me talking with an urgency … I started thinking, ‘Something bad is going on here.’ Even after I found out I had a blood clot in my lung, it still didn’t register to me that it was a big deal.”
According to Robert Maholic, DO, cardiologist with the UPMC Hamot Heart and Vascular Institute, Rick had a very large clot that was affecting both sides of his lungs, forcing his heart to work harder than usual. The doctors at UPMC Hamot chose an advanced technique to treat Rick’s embolism.
“The personnel at UPMC Hamot were professional and understanding and obviously very knowledgeable about what was going on with me because they were ahead of the game every step of the way.”
Although he is still coming to terms with how serious his situation was, Rick knows coming to UPMC Hamot has helped him tell his story today.
“It’s the right place to go, they know what they’re doing, and they saved my life.”
