Kelly knew her second pregnancy was going to be high risk, but she trusted her doctor at home to get her through it. It wasn’t until she was in her 11th week she found out just how high-risk her pregnancy was, and that she was going to need fetal surgery right away in order to save her pregnancy.
Kelly’s husband is also a physician and he, and her OB/GYN, both agreed that her best chance would be to travel to Pittsburgh to have Stephen P. Emery, MD, at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC do the surgery.
A few days after the surgery, Kelly went back home feeling fine. At 34 weeks, she delivered a healthy baby boy named Sean.
Sean recently had his first birthday party. Instead of gifts, his parents requested donations to the fetal therapy program at Magee. Kelly credits Dr. Emery with not just saving her son’s life, but for saving her life, too.
