Jim went into his local hospital in Alameda, California for what he thought to be a routine hernia repair, but shortly after the surgery he received an unexpected call.
“They had found a rare cancer, Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), and I needed to get a CT scan right away,” said Jim.
Knowing the risks associated with this rare abdominal cancer, Jim began his homework. Researching surgeons from all over the country, and one name kept coming up— David Bartlett in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Bartlett a leading expert at UPMC, specializes in all aspects of surgical oncology. He has brought to the region innovative practices and techniques for treating complex cancers.
“UPMC was just the whole package,” said Jim, “My wife and I called it the wrap around welcome.”
Jim returned home nearly ten years ago, and now lives an active, fulfilling life with his wife and two young children.
