Meet Charlene

Charlene was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm at the age of 46. She was referred to a surgeon in Florida, where she lives, who had not performed many valve replacement surgeries. “To me, [the number] wasn’t nearly enough, so I started researching.”

Charlene, her brother, and a family friend started researching, and all three found Dr. Tom Gleason at UPMC’s Heart & Vascular Institute. “I felt comfortable with him from the beginning.”

Dr. Gleason performed open heart surgery to replace Charlene’s aorta. She spent five days in the hospital and three weeks at her parent’s home in Freeport, PA before traveling home to Florida. This month, Charlene celebrates her six-year surgery anniversary.

“I can’t say enough about the care… I don’t think I would have the outcome here in Florida that I had in Pittsburgh and with Dr. Gleason and UPMC.”
